We're Going to Party like it's 1999! #RIS12
I am sitting in the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA getting ready for the start of the Recruiting Innovation Summit put on by ERE. There is an excitement in the room that I have not seen for quite a while. Later today there will be presentations from 6 technology start ups in a competition that will reward the winner with $10,000.
But what's amazing is, there are enough new start ups in the recruiting technology space we could fill a week long conference. It reminds me a little of what it was like in 1999.
Recruiting is sexy again.
In the late 90's the terms Talent Acquisition and Talent Management were used interchangeably. All of the innovation was focussed on recruiting. But after the melt down in 2001/2002, the concept of integrated talent management emerged and the quest for building the comprehensive suite was on. Innovation seemed to stall. Instead of building something new, more focus was placed on growing horizontally.
If you look at the recent M&A activity in the talent management technology arena, I think we have hit a key turning point. The acquisitions of Taleo and SuccessFactors by Oracle and SAP mark a changing of the guard. The ATS products built for the Web are now legacy and Talent Management Suite products are turning into the core HRM behemoths they used to compete with. And now with the shift in technology from Web to Social and Mobile, once again Recruiting is leading the charge with innovation.
I am looking forward to sharing with you my observations from this conference, stay tuned.
".....They say two thousand zero zero, party over, oops out of time. So tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999."
